After a storm passes, it’s important to stay safe while waiting for help to arrive. Here are some tips to help prevent further damage after a storm, especially if your home has some water damage:
Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the home when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.
Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying. Do not put cushion covers in the washing machine.
Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
Move any paintings, art, objects, computers, documents or other sensitive valuables to a dry place.
Hang furs and leather goods separately at room temperature.
Don’t enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards!
Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into carpet and avoid tracking.
Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork
If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
Wipe soot from metal kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances.
Don’t attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO.
Don’t attempt to shampoo carpet, rug or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO.
Don’t attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that maybe have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.
Storm damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. It’s important to note that your home must be maintained to a reasonable standard. Otherwise, it could be hard to prove that the storm was the cause of the damage versus a lack of proper maintenance and general wear and tear.
